The Samedia Shebeen is an ambitious off-shoot of the Departure Lounge club. It started life in 2010 as an idea for a touring festival tent, transporting late-night party people to an imaginary jungle voodoo den cum lost township shebeen. With full, immersive set design and décor, and a soundtrack that spans music from the tropical regions, both ancient and futuristic… Afrobeat, hi-life, cumbia, samba, salsa, get mixed up with cutting edge basslines and computerised beats, with dashings of dancehall, house and all kinds of other spice. Live drums and horns can be expected too. The formula has proven a big hit with people at clubs and festivals.
Since 2010 Samedia has popped up at The Roxy Arthouse during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, appeared as a regular clubnight at Edinburgh venues and travelled to Boomtown Fair, Kelburn Garden Party and Knockengorroch Festival. Samedia DJs have also travelled the world playing clubs, festivals and parties, with highlights including Mzoli’s and Fiction in Cape Town, Soundwave Festival in Croatia, Arcadia and The Rum Shack at Glastonbury, M-Bar in Helsinki, Electric Picnic in Ireland, Wellington Jazz Festival, La Casbah in Antigua, Traffic in La Paz, Copan in Honduras and Mandrea Festival Italy.
The Samedia Shebeen is available to hire as a complete package including frontage, tent, soundsystem, décor and DJs. Also included in the full package is the Samedia Outrider – a mobile 12v battery powered soundsystem and fruit shop that brings the tropical flavour to the parts other soundsystems can’t reach! Samedia Shebeen DJs are also available for DJ bookings.
